A fair way to pick the first player
In many board games and card games, going first is an advantage or at least a source of arguments. A coin removes the argument: both players have exactly the same chance, and the result is announced for everyone to see.
How to use it
- Type the two player names (or teams) into the label boxes under the coin.
- Tap the coin or press Space.
- The name that lands face up goes first.
Picking first player with more than two people
For three or more players, the easiest approach is to roll a die. Give each player a number and let the dice roller choose. Alternatively, run a knockout: two players flip, and the winner flips against the next player.
Games where first player matters
- Chess and draughts: a toss for colours, since White moves first.
- Card games: who deals, who leads, who bids first.
- Board games: who takes the opening turn or picks a colour.
- Video games: who picks the map, the side or the character.
If the game is long and the lead matters, agree to alternate who starts in later rounds.

Frequently asked questions
Is picking the first player with a coin fair?
Yes. Each player has exactly a 50% chance, decided by your browser's secure random number generator.
Can I use my own names?
Yes. Type any names, up to 18 characters each, and the coin shows them.
What about three or more players?
Number the players and use the dice roller, or run a knockout of coin flips between pairs.
Should the loser go first or second?
That depends on the game. Decide before you flip what the winner of the toss gets to choose.
