Series length and how many flips it takes
With a fair coin, every flip is 50/50, but a longer series makes a single lucky streak less decisive. Here is how long each series usually lasts:
| Series | Points to win | Maximum flips | Chance it ends in the fewest flips |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best of 3 | 2 | 3 | 50% (2 flips) |
| Best of 5 | 3 | 5 | 25% (3 flips) |
| Best of 7 | 4 | 7 | 12.5% (4 flips) |
Does best of 3 make it fairer?
Every player still has exactly a 50% chance of winning the series, whatever its length. What changes is the drama. A best of 3 is over in two flips half of the time, and a best of 7 usually goes to five or six flips. If you want a quick answer, flip once. If you want a more satisfying decider, play best of 5.

Frequently asked questions
How many wins do I need in a best of 3?
Two. The series stops as soon as one side has two wins, so it lasts two or three flips.
Does a longer series make the coin fairer?
No. Each flip is 50/50 whatever the series length. A longer series just makes one lucky streak less likely to decide the result.
Should we keep the same side for the whole series?
Yes. Agree who is heads and who is tails before the first flip and stick with it.
Can I flip more than one coin at once?
Yes, though for a series it is simplest to use one coin at a time.
